President’s Message- June 2011
Congratulations to each of you that qualified to show at Western Nationals in Ogden, and kudos to those of you who were finalists there! Idaho was definitely well represented.
As most of you are aware, the recent outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) is affecting the entire equine industry extensively. On behalf of the ICHA, I would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to each of you who have been personally impacted by this.
Please be aware that the following ICHA-approved shows have been cancelled in an effort to protect each of you and your equine partners from EHV-1.
- BVCHA show– May 28 & 29, 2011 (Caldwell, ID)
- Area 3 NCHA Weekend show– June 3 & 4, 2011 (Hurricane, UT)
- Area 4 NCHA Weekend show– June 4 & 5, 2011 (Dillon, MT)
Veterinarians around the country are advising that the most influential thing that you can do is to STAY INFORMED, and STAY HOME. Don’t go anywhere unless it is absolutely necessary. Don’t share water buckets between horses, don’t allow nose-to-nose contact, don’t share bits between horses unless you disinfect them first. If you suspect that a horse has been exposed, take its temperature twice a day and monitor it for any changes in gait, appetite, etc.
Diluted bleach (mixed 1 part bleach to 9 or 10 parts water) will make a disinfectant solution that will kill EHV-1. Nolvasan (chlorhexidine) solution is also a good disinfectant choice.
There is an abundance of information regarding EHV available. Please let us know if you need information and we would be happy to assist you.
I wish each of you comfort and peace in the weeks to come, and I look forward to seeing each of you down the road somewhere soon.
